Green education for a green future

0

Nowadays you can hardly pass a day without hearing or reading something about the ‘green’ World. In today’s paper I read: Solar Millennium will build Worlds largest solar power station in California. The German build company Erlangen develops together with oil concern Chevron four solar installations.

In the same paper I read that even skepticisms about the environmental theories are even that the World is changing. If you like it or do not, it is a fact. But it also offers chances. It will become more important, because more people realize the consequences.

Last weekend was also the yearly Green Challenge in The Netherlands. Scot Frank developed a saucer-shaped portable and payable solar collector, especially for The Third World in which sunlight is abundant. Scot was rewarded with 500,000 euro (circa 650,000 U.S. dollar) and the producers are very enthusiast.

But it is not for everyone to be as genius as him. The problem is, many of us see the consequences of a changing and more polluted world, but not create solutions.

In fact it starts that we do not have enough education at schools about this theme. The younger you learn about it the better you gather the information. Unfortunately in many schools need some time to integrate sustainable development in their lessons or the importance it is still underestimated. It takes any time to integrate it in the school program. But there are education sets and toys to learn playfully about physics and sustainable development.

Going Green in School

0

Living green at home can make a huge difference on the environment but this does not mean you cannot go green at school too.

If the school is near your home, then have your kids walk to school. Many of us will surely have heard of our grandparents walking to school that is a several miles away, either in snowy or rainy condition, although it need not be that bad for our children. If school is just within 2 miles and your kid is mature enough, you can let him/her walk as walking can be quite beneficial.
However, it is also important to take into consideration the safety of the route as well as the climate condition. This is because the safety of your child is not worth any savings you get.

If you really need to drive your kid to school, make sure you could at least arrange to take a few more kids to school. Try to organize a group with like-minded parents and try to arrange convenient schedules. Have everyone in the group involved and make sure you have all contact information of everyone should there be any emergencies. Also, try to make sure that the driver of the day is made aware, as early as possible, if your kid will not be attending school for the day so that they do not need to drive by your place needlessly just to find out that your kid will not be going anyway.

When buying school supplies, try to buy recycled papers, solar-powered calculators, and nontoxic crayons, markers, and glues. Try packing your kids lunch on reusable bags or lunch boxes. Simple things like this makes less impact not only on the limited resources we have but also on the planet.
