Old school marine navigation has always been difficult to learn and employ, especially when you are confronted by the massive size of the high seas. This is when reality sets that you must rely on your instincts as well as tools such as compasses, nautical charts and sextants to get to where they want to go. However, these days thanks to modern technology, you no longer have to rely on age-old marine navigation tools to go on a cruise. The birth of Global Positioning System (GPS) has paved the way for modern ways in exploring the open seas. They are very helpful in keeping you aware of your exact position. Some navigating systems even notify you of your bearing and heading and alert you should you deviate off course. There are even more advanced systems that guides you throughout your course in order to avoid treacherous waters.

The truth is there are many modern electronics in use for marine navigation today that were not available to mariners many decades ago. These days we have SSB radios, antennas, and satellite communication to help mariner keep in contact with other mariners as well as with coast guards and people on land. These tools are essential when asking for help when you are stranded or lost in the middle of nowhere. They are more or less the lifeline to the mainland.

The advent of marine electronics has in more ways paved the way to safety on water. People who have them equipped on their boats, yachts, or sailboats will likely never get lost when cruising out on the open seas and oceans. However, as a matter of contingency, it is important that you learn how to use the compass and nautical charts should something happen to your marine electronics and that you should always have them with you on board when ferrying out on the open waters.
